Reducing Unnecessary Lab Testing – A QI Initiative

By Joshua Vogt, M.D.

Several of our Internal Medicine residents were involved in a quality improvement (QI) project earlier this past fall with the aim of reducing unnecessary lab testing in the hospital.  Specifically, they sought to implement an education based initiative to reduce the number of unnecessary "routine" complete blood count (CBC's) and electrolyte panel orders on inpatients.  The resident QI team successfully reduced these lab test orders by 33% during the study period.  The group won the QI poster competition at the Minnesota regional American College of Physician's (ACP) meeting this past year and presented their work at the national ACP meeting earlier this year.
