Women in Medicine

By Lucinda Gruber

Friday night marked the official kickoff event for the Women in Medicine group. The group was formed last year to serve as a support and mentorship program for women in medical school, residency, and fellowship. Our aim is to "empower women in medicine and advance women's health, through mentorship, leadership development, advocacy and community outreach." We met up for a social mixer which included tasty munchies and a variety of wines and sparkling waters. It was an exceptional turn out with women from Mayo Medical School, all PGY years of internal medicine residency, and a sprinkling of radiology, neurology, dermatology, PMR, and pediatric residents. Dr. Oxentenko also joined us, which made this a really fun night.

Our group did a variety of meetings last year, ranging from panel discussions of commonly encountered issues for women in medicine to social events to a night discussing professional dress. We were also invited to speak to a women's group at the medical school about career planning and work-life integration. Although, as Dagny would say, we are all still working on balanced work-life integration!

Moving forward, we are hoping to focus even more on the mentorship piece of our organization as well as continuing education and social events. Stay tuned.
